David Brian Merrick, born the first of John and Mary Merrick’s five sons on October 3, 1952 in Philadelphia, passed away on September 16, 2013. Survivors include brothers John, Christopher (Patricia), Steven (Elizabeth), and Donald, along with seven nieces and nephews, Andrew, Charlotte, Kathryn, Emily, Sean, Patrick, and Erin.
Dave was the salutatorian of his 1970 graduating class at Penndel’s Marist Preparatory Academy. He graduated from La Salle University with a B.A. in History in 1976.
Dave was an intense, solitary man who loved to read, appreciated the outdoors, and lived a simple life. As a youth, he was a gifted athlete. In later years, he devoted his energies to cycling. Most Bucks County motorists no doubt have passed Dave by at one time or another as he bicycled from here to there.
While Dave worked in a variety of jobs, his passion was writing. Dave’s legacy includes thousands of handwritten and manually typed pages of journals and stories along with, from his later years, entries detailing his personal struggle to manage life at its most basic level as well as his manuscript of an apocalyptic novel to which he had devoted years of his life.
Dave’s early interest in literature and art inspired his brothers to similar pursuits that immensely enriched their lives. The honor roll of 20th century writers that Dave introduced into the house was a source of fellowship that survives his death. But Dave’s learned one-line (and last word) critiques will be sorely missed at family gatherings.
Dave battled back after the onset of cancer. After his treatments, he found new strength. Both Dave and his family treasured the extra time and deepened connections that his extended life gave them.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church in Lower Makefield, PA on Saturday, September 21st at 11:00 a.m. A viewing beginning at 9:30 a.m. will precede the Mass. The Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Ignatius Cemetery.
