Claire M. Connell died on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 from complications resulting from Alzheimer’s disease, at the Attleboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Langhorne, Pa. She was 84.
Claire was born in Boston, Mass., a daughter of the late Albert and Catherine Doherty McNamara, and lived in Allston and Reading Mass., before moving to Yardley, Pa. 46 years ago.
Claire’s belief that all young people should have an opportunity for a good education led her to serve on the Board of Directors of the Pennsbury Scholarship Foundation for 31 years. She served as vice president and president and was bestowed the title of director emeritus in 2008. Claire’s compassionate manner also led her to join the Board of Directors of the UIH Family Partners, supporting single mothers in their efforts to build a life for themselves and their children. In addition to her charitable work, Claire was an avid reader and golfer, enjoyed traveling and was a devoted Catholic.
She was the wife of the late William M. Connell III; sister of the late Albert McNamara III and the late Catherine Kay McDonnell. She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen M. Connell of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, William M. Connell IV of Rye, N.H., David J. Connell of Fairfax, Va., and Steven J. Connell of Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, John McNamara of Fort Myers, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Sean and Wills Connell.
The funeral will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday from the FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral Home, 17 S. Delaware Avenue (River Road), Yardley, Pa. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, Lower Makefield. Burial will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
