Welcome to Saint John the Evangelist School,
a National Blue Ribbon School of Academic Excellence

Saint John the Evangelist School (SJE), in faithfulness to Catholic Christian values and the school’s mission statement, nurtures the whole child through a well-rounded, culturally rich academic program that enables students to grow spiritually, intellectually, and socially. In 2008, SJE received national honors by being awarded recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School. Blue Ribbon Schools, such as SJE, are academically superior schools with high curricular standards; in addition, SJE students are continually engaged, challenged and empowered to be accountable as independent and collaborative 21st century learners.

SJE provides an academically challenging curriculum in pre- kindergarten through eighth grade for religion, integrated language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies as well as an enriching curriculum for art, music, physical education, technology and Spanish (grades 5-8). Standards of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania form the core curriculum offered at SJE; academically challenging, these standards afford teachers the framework not only to teach the basics, but also to go beyond the basics. Students are active participants in experiential learning opportunities whenever possible and with the use of a variety of hands-on and digital resources, students are motivated learners.

The dedicated staff at SJE prides itself in supporting students to go beyond basic expectations. Teachers bring a sense of professionalism, competency, and warmth to all areas of the educational environment. Benchmarks and varied instructional strategies guide students to reach prescribed academic goals and support the development of the individual learner with the skills necessary to reach his/her highest potential. Teachers and staff at SJE, in their care for the students and for one another, serve as genuine, dedicated Catholic role models to the school community.

Parents are also valuable participants at SJE. The Home and School Association supports the students and faculty by assisting the school community with daily tasks, arranging educational enrichment programs and providing students with assemblies of a multi-cultural nature, all of which broaden and enhance the educational development of the total child. Many of our school families have both parents working full-time jobs, yet their commitment to their child’s Catholic education is so strong that these parents rarely miss the many special daytime or evening school-wide events.

Our faith-based learning community is rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ and this is our main focus daily. Each day opens with announcements, birthday celebrations, student-led prayers and a reflection of the daily Gospel. With prayers throughout the day, daily religion classes, Sacramental celebrations, First Friday School Masses and additional prayer services throughout the year, students at SJE are offered many opportunities to practice and experience their faith.

This year and and next, our theme will be Discovering and Embracing the Benefits of Healthy Habits. We will be learning about the healthy habits that fully benefit the whole person: mind, body and soul through our school-wide exploration of the 16 Habits of Mind, the many ways of Going Green, and the 7 Theological Virtues that help to strengthen and sustain our Catholic faith-filled lives. Our website will support our theme by highlighting our classroom efforts and by providing information to our families that will encourage efforts at home. Our theme opens doors for continuous learning and provides the necessary strategies and rigorous educational experiences to meet the relevant needs of our every student.
